One of the number one questions we receive here at Dame Traveler centers around one question – what kind of shoes should I pack? It’s a well known need for us travelers to have two shoes that can do it all, make us feel fabulous, feel comfortable (…and not rip our feet to shreds after a long day of adventuring). Today, we’re sharing some of our favorite pairs of travel friendly shoes!
Our Shoe Standards
Our needs are simple – comfort and class. Depending on where you’re jetting off to, its important to have some standby shoe classics to turn to. That means one pair of great walking shoes, one pair of shoes that go easily from day to night, a great hot-weather shoe and a great boot for hikes and other outdoorsy activities.
Now, ladies, obviously not all of these can go in your carry on! Pack wisely. Choose two – three shoes max for your adventures. If you’re feeling confused about which ones to pack, make a list of all of your activities and put them into a pie chart. You’ll see very clearly which shoes are an absolute must and which ones are a no-go.
These Shoes Were Made For Walking
Perfect for days on your feet, sight seeing. These shoes are casual, comfortable… and don’t make you look like an obvious tourist!
When shopping for the perfect pair of walking shoes, I love a neutral shoe that can go with just about everything – whether its with a casual sundress or active wear. As I’ve become quite the packing aficionado, I’ve really narrowed down what makes the perfect sneaker. I’m a huge fan of Divadi’s vegan beauts (perfect for any woman who really wants to zero in on being a more ethical shopper/traveler). Besides their ethical commitment to sustainability, I’ve also found that their at a great price point and are just so chic.
Cross-Over Shoes: Day To Night
These shoes are the shoes that transition easily from day time activities out and about to nights out, grabbing drinks with friends or hitting the town.
Never overlook comfort when it comes to travel shoes. Listen up! Sure, those adorable Mary Janes may be the cherry on top of your glamorous outfit. But seriously consider the materials they are made. If they cut into your ankles or have any parts that dig into your feet – stow them away until their more worn in. Travel is NOT the time to test drive a new pair of flats!
Hot Weather Standards
Temperatures in your destination making you sweat? It’s important to have some great hot weather standard shoes to turn to.
I love packing a slide into my suitcase for hot weather destinations. Keep in mind, having a strap that wraps around your ankles may be a good choice if you’ll be walking on rocky roads or cobble stoned streets.
Cold Weather Cuties
Should you be about to jet off to a cool weathered climate, having some great shoes for snow, sleet and chilly temps is fantastic. We’re opting to not feature hiking boots… that’s a whole other post!
Packing for cold weather can be tedious – check out our guide here if you haven’t already. For a chillier destination, choose closed toe shoes that double up as sturdy and stylish.
