Interview with Dame Traveler Ashlea of A Globe Well Travelled

Hi there. I’m Ashlea, a colourfully clothed and excitable vegetarian who loves photography and exploring the world. I’m also known for being a super-organised freak, having a stationery addiction, and being obsessed with maps.

My blog is called A Globe Well Travelled and I began in July 2014 when I was sitting at my desk thinking about how I would go about sharing the photos from my next trip to Indonesia.

Facebook seemed so temporary. My friends and family would look at the photos once and then forgot about them, never to be viewed again. I wanted my photos and stories to last, to inspire other people, and to be admired by all! So what better way than compiling them all into one super blog?

My parents used to take my brother and I on trips around Australia as we were growing up, but the definitive moment when travel became an addiction was when I went international for the first time in 2006.

We took the 24-hour flight from Australia to Italy, then made our way around Europe for 3 weeks. I was blown away by the sights, the smells, the people, and the culture differences. The world had become a new and exciting place, and I just couldn’t wait to see more of it. Since then, I’ve traveled internationally 12 times.

Where have you traveled to thus far?
I’ve been to 30 countries over 4 continents, including Australia, Europe, Asia, and North America, and will be hitting up my 5th continent (South America) in May this year!

What is your travel style?
Hanging out in hostels, doing walking tours around a new city, and finding undiscovered areas is my favourite way to travel. Doing things on the cheap is of the upmost importance to me (I’ve gotta make my hard earned dollars stretch as far as possible!) so I love finding travel hacks that save me money and knowing that I’ve been able to see a place without paying through the roof.

If you could pick up and go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? 1,2,3 quick!
I’d bring forward my trip to Central and South America to now instead of May! The trip will take me to 4 new countries and is the beginning of long-term travels through the Americas with my partner.

How has a life of travel changed you?
Where do I even start! I’ve become more minimalist, keeping barely any possessions so that I can pick up and go at any time. I’ve become more open-minded and willing to try new things. I’m more confident, and now have the ability to do anything I set my mind to. And I’m much happier now than I would be if I were stuck in one place all the time!

What’s your best advice for aspiring wanderlusters out there?
If you have the desire to travel, do it now, not later.

There will always be a million reasons why you shouldn’t leave now – a job, a house, family issues, upcoming events… the list goes on. But the worst thing in the world would be if you got to a point where you wished you had put aside  those minor hurdles and just gone for it.

It might be scary. You might piss someone off. You might go into debt or risk losing a promotion, but who cares – at least you’ll actually be living your life instead of being one of those boring people who never does anything interesting.

Don’t wait! Live your life with no regrets.
